BGCT Executive Director Charles Wade released this statement today:
Questions have been raised about the use of BGCT church starting funds by First Baptist Church of Weslaco while Jonathan Becker was its pastor. As a result, the BGCT staff has been involved the past two weeks in determining the details of our funding of various efforts at Weslaco First.
Just because questions are raised does not mean there necessarily is a problem, but we have the responsibility to find answers to those questions.
The BGCT supports church missions efforts by helping fund new church starts. This financial support is given to churches and then distributed according to the budget for the new congregation. The BGCT does not pay the salaries of pastors, but the funds may be used for that purpose, as well as other costs associated with the new work. Also, the BGCT does not pay for more than 50 percent of the new church budget; the remainder comes from the new congregation itself, the sponsoring church and often the regional association.
We are seeking to determine if the BGCT money in question was used appropriately, and I will report specifics of what we know about the Weslaco situation to the BGCT Executive Board when it meets Sept. 24-25.
