Bawcom to step down as UMHB president

Before I get too far into disaster relief coverage, I want to note that late Friday Dr. Bawcom announced he will be stepping down as UMHM president. For all the details, click here.

Disaster relief update

In what will probably be the first of many disaster relief updates, Texas Baptist Men has four feeding units active and serving, one each in Marshall, Longview, Lufkin and Bryan. It has eight shower units spread across the state to support shelters and relief workers. Churches across East Texas are making their facilities available for use.

According to the Dallas Morning News, Buckner is evacuating people from its retirement home in Beaumont. I don’t have an update on patients at Memorial Hermann Hospital.

As Texas Baptists are known to do, they are putting reaching to people in need of help. Please be in prayer for the people evacuating the coastline and for the volunteers who seek to help them.

I’ll try to make this blog the most up to date site as far as Texas Baptist activities related to Gustav response. It’s going to be tough as I’ll be running in several different directions, but I’ll do the best I can.

At this point, it appears this is going to require a sizable relief effort for some time. To do this requires some significant resources. Please prayerfully consider giving to disaster response through the BGCT by clicking here or through TBM by clicking here.

Missions Photo Contest: Like Little Children

You find that when students start to let down there guard a change begins to happen with the children. The chaos or should I say play time began when Elliott was wrestled to the ground by a couple of the kids. To know that someone cares enough to open themselves up and share the love of God to a child makes a huge impact on one of these little ones.

Engage conference dates set

The web folks just showed me the new web sites for the Engage, Radical Engage and Engage XP evangelism conferences. Pretty cool stuff. Check it out at www.bgct.org/engage. The site includes all the featured speakers and conference dates.

Right now conferences are planned in Grapevine, Belton, Harlingen, Beaumont/Orange, Amarillo, Lubbock, El Paso, San Antonio, Houston and Midland/Odessa. Plenty of good stuff there. Mark your calendars now.

Steve Vernon nominated to be associate executive director

This afternoon the BGCT Executive Board was told Steve Vernon will be nominated to serve as BGCT associate executive director/missions coordinator. I can’t claim to be Steve’s best friend, but I don’t think I’ve ever heard say a bad word about him. He’s just a pleasant guy to be around.

I think everyone who reads this blog knows who Steve is, but here’s a link to a story with some background information.

TBM going to Republic of Georgia

DALLAS – A seven-person Texas Baptist Men team is headed to the Republic of Georgia to feed people affected by the fighting there.

The team will help set up a kitchen and feed people in Gori, Georgia. Russian troops have pulled back to a position six miles outside Gori and continue to control access to Georgia’s key port at Poti, according to the AFP news service. Russians also are manning positions in Abkhazia and South Ossetia, two provinces that have sought independence from Georgia. The Russians also have left “peacekeepers” in a buffer zone they created inside Georgia.

To support this effort, send checks designated “disaster relief” to Texas Baptist Men at 5351 Catron, Dallas 75227.
